The Students
SK Stables includes students of varied skill levels, backgrounds and ages. You can read some of their stories below.
| Maddy has been riding with SK Stables for two years now and would like to become a vet some day. This is what she had to say about SK Stables. There are three particular reasons why I like riding at SK Stables. Sue, the owner and instructor, has always been a horsewoman and knows just about everything when it comes to horses and riding. She always gives us special attention if we need help handling our horses. She is a great instructor. Another thing about the barn is the horses, they are truly amazing horses. They are turned out in the pastures on a regular daily basis so they have room to just be horses. Riding is such a thrilling experience especially on the horses. There is a horse for each riding level so you can advance, as your skills increase. Each horse is unique in their own way. All of the other students at the barn are friendly. They help you when you need it and they are really kind to you. SK Stables is a wonderful barn, and I enjoy riding there. ~Maddy |

| Lauren has been riding with SK Stables for about a year and a half. This is her story. Hi, my name is Lauren and I am 12 years old. I own a sorrel Quarter Horse mare named Twilight and she is 8 years old. About a year and a half ago, I was at a boarding stable in Chico and my horse and I were not getting along at all. We were getting worse and I didn’t know why. Twilight would pin her ears and kick out with one of her hind legs. My mom and I didn’t know what to do. Then we heard about Sue Kellogg. My mom and I went and met her and watched her instruct some kids. When we first brought Twilight to Sue, we noticed a change in her within 5 minutes. We knew this was the place for Twilight to be. There was pasture everywhere, an arena and a very nice barn. I learned that you horse needs to respect your space. Then after that I worked on balance while I rode bareback. It was scary at first, but it was a good way to learn balance. Then I learned I was using all hands and no leg. So I have been working on that ever since. Twilight and I are becoming a team. And I am learning “the feel” that Sue keeps talking about. We also go to the schooling shows in Durham to practice what I have learned. It is a lot of fun. Twilight gets to share a pasture with a bay quarter pony named Candy. They are good buddies. Twilight does not pin her ears anymore. I have also made some friends at SK Stables: they are Jacqueline, Madeline and Laura. But because of Sue, Twilight and I are happy again. |
